Propellant Production from Mars Atmosphere

by Jean Lagarde last modified 2007-02-09 14:16

Once the surface payload is unloaded, propellant production begins. The carbon dioxide atmosphere of Mars is reacted with hydrogen imported from Earth to make the nearly 30 metric tons of oxygen and methane required to eventually deliver the crew from the planetary surface to Mars orbit. The ascent vehicle is fully fueled before the crew leaves Earth to begin their journey to Mars.
