by Susan Holden Martin last modified 2008-08-11 10:47 — expired

The Mars Society is pleased to announce that Michael Carroll, an award winning and internationally recognized astronomical, science fiction and paleo artist will be a plenary speaker at its 11th Annual International Convention to be held at the University of Colorado at Boulder, August 14-17, 2008. Carroll will be giving his widely renowned "Alien Volcanoes" lecture, a tour of volcanic activity in the Solar System.

Michael Carroll is a Fellow and founding member of the International Association for Astronomical Arts, and is a member of the NASA Arts Program. He was a staff artist for the Reuben Fleet Space Theater, one of the world's largest planetariums and OMNIMAX theatres in San Diego. His art has appeared in Time, National Geographic, Smithsonian, and Astronomy, to name just a few of the several hundred distinguished magazines that have published his work. His paintings have been exhibited at the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum and Moscow's Institute for Space Research, among others. One of his original paintings flew aboard MIR, and his murals include work for the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, Lockheed-Martin, and The Planetary Society. His work has aired on NOVA and National Geographic's Explorer, and other TV specials. His images have covered numerous books, including works by Carl Sagan and Arthur C. Clarke.

As a science journalist, Mike has written and illustrated many articles for Astronomy, Sky & Telescope, and Popular Science magazines, to name a few. In addition, he has written and/or co-authored several children's books on science and the universe, including: Visions of the Revelation, the Exploring God's World series, for which he was a Gold Medallion finalist, and Eat My Martian Dust. He also wrote the highly popular science-themed Absolutely Awesome devotionals, a book series themed in parallel with the creation days of Genesis which debuted in 2005, and covers topics ranging from space to geology and biology. He is currently working on several other titles for both adults and children.

Mike received the 2006 Lucien Rudaux Lifetime Award for his contributions to the astronomical arts, and has also received the 2001 and 2002 Reader's Choice awards for outstanding science fiction cover art.

He has lectured and taught classes in public and private schools from kindergarten to the adult learner. He has led numerous domestic and international workshops on art, writing, and astronomy.
